«The Divine and Felonious Nature of Cyber Security»

Over the past 7 years of the DevOps movement, there has been a healthy tension between behaviour, speed, and resilience. Empirical and analytical evidence suggests that when these three are in equilibria the outcomes create an organizational performance. With behaviour being an anchor of organizational performance. In DevSecOps, the motivation is to embed security patterns and practices into existing DevOps capabilities thereby creating similar equilibria with increased organizational performance. In this session, we are going to observe the IT security practices over the past 10 years that one might suggest having had a metaphorically «felonious» narrative based on the resultant outcomes. In the DevSecOps metaphorically «divine» narrative we will see once again that it’s not all just about technology, however, performance outcomes will again be heavily anchored in our behaviours.

«Back from the future: Learnings from 3 years of serverless»

Heard about serverless computing and want to understand more about what «going serverless» will really mean for your company? In this talk, Peter Sbarski — shares his experiences building one of the world’s first completely serverless companies, starting in 2015 using AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Google Firebase & more. 3 years into the experience, he shares insights on both the opportunities & challenges presented by this new operating model — and explains why he thinks serverless development & architectures will be the new norm in the future. This is a pragmatic look at the reality of implementing serverless architectures & technologies in your business today, minus the hype. He’ll even tell you why it’s OK to build a serverless monolith & not be afraid of tech debt!

«The Road to Kubernetes — The ANZ DevOps Journey»

This is the story of how a small 5 person «Pitcrew» DevOps team grew into the 30+ person Platform Engineering Team. I discuss the importance of starting with culture first, how to create urgency to accept change and how we implemented Kubernetes to improve our end-to-end flow. It’s a collection of amusing stories, important lesson we learned (including few failures) and the current status of our DevOps transformation.

«Living in a world where DevOps and NoOps intersect: how to use both for massive scale data & analytics on GCP.»

When you work on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for data & analytics, the tools at your disposal are some of the best examples of «NoOps» solutions available on public cloud. BigQuery, Cloud Dataflow, and Cloud Dataproc are all GCP services where you have nothing to spin up nor maintain. They do what they say on the tin: «fully managed». That said however, in the real world, you still need DevOps processes to succeed on GCP in the enterprise. Those applications and data pipelines that all sit on top of these NoOps tools won’t build and deploy themselves silly! In this talk I’ll give an overview of the core NoOps tools on GCP, and then — despite their «NoOps» claim — explain why you still need to have DevOps’y things (Jenkins, Docker etc.) happening around them to build anything scalable and valuable to the enterprise.

«Is No-Ops the future of DevOps?»

With an increasing number of good SaaS options for development and operations tooling; combined with FaaS architecture that requires almost no infrastructure when run in a public cloud setting, where does this leave the Ops in DevOps? This talk will look at the changing landscape for systems engineering and how I predict how both the role of Developers and Operations will continue to evolve.»

«DevOps: An Agile Architect’s Perspective»

The New Relic product organization is an agile shop that operates by DevOps principles. In this talk I’ll present some of the lessons we have learned in the past two years since a major reorganization of our team to be more focused on sustainably shipping value, extrapolating these results to provide some guiding concepts for successfully implementing DevOps.

«Do Change with Communities of Practice»

Everyone here at DevOps Talks is on a journey. The journey has names like DevOps Transformation, Digital Transformation, or IT Modernization. This talk will explore some of the tools, workflows, practices, and mindset that lead to success. Along with your [DevOps digital modernization automation] journey, you will encounter new tools, new workflows, and higher-levels of collaboration across all teams. Along the journey, teams will reorient to help deliver customer outcomes and tighten feedback loops. The principles and practices required are, collectively, known as «DevOps." This talk will explore the meaning of DevOps and introduce you and your team to its principles and practices.

«Big Data, hybrid data integration service and dataops in enterprise-grade security»

In the world of big data, raw, unorganized data is often stored in relational, non-relational, and other storage systems. However, on its own, raw data doesn’t have the proper context or meaning to provide meaningful insights to analysts, data scientists, or business decision makers. With Azure Data Factory, a hybrid data integration service, you can work with data wherever it lives, in the cloud or on-premises, with enterprise-grade security. Create, schedule, and manage your data integration, build custom data-driven cloud applications that embed a data integration experience with global scale. Transform raw data into finished, shaped data ready for consumption by business intelligence tools or custom applications.

«Rowing in the same direction: a devops approach to leading people»

Devops is about changing technical culture. But technical culture isn’t created in a vacuum — it’s nurtured and reinforced by the broader organisational culture our tech orgs are part of. That culture comes from people — our artifacts, beliefs, and assumptions. Unless we deepen our people’s skills, knowledge, and experience, we’ll get the culture change we deserve. What does technical culture change look like, and how does it survive? What’s required of leaders of people who ship digital products? And why are people the hardest but most important piece of the puzzle to change?

«Measuring and driving DevOps practices in the real world»

How do you measure and motivate teams to ship code faster and more reliably without sacrificing quality, stability, reliability and maintainability? MessageMedia has a number of technology goals aimed at measuring these different factors to help drive continuous improvements within the team. Many of these measurements are best practices in DevOps culture and I’m going to share some of the real world details around how we actually measure these factors and use them day to day with our teams.

«Building Hybrid cloud with Kubernetes»

Kubernetes adoption as an open-source orchestration engine for containerized applications grew significantly over the past years. The challenges around it also evolved with time. In the beginning it was about the easy way to provision Kubernetes cluster. This day the real challenge is management of multiple clusters, focusing on: * Unified cluster management with an ability to deploy and monitor Kubernetes on any public cloud and on premise * Configure and enforce configure access control and security policies across multiple clusters * Make application workload management easy for an end user. This session will go over challenges hit and approaches taken, while building Rancher — an open source Kubernetes clusters management platform. The focus won’t be on the product itself, but on problems and solutions that are common for similar projects. Live demo will be a part of the session

«How to adapt the SDLC for DevSecOps»

The standard approach for web application security over the last decade and beyond has focused heavily on slow gatekeeping controls like static analysis and dynamic scanning. However, these controls was originally designed in a world of Waterfall development and their heavy weight nature often cause more problems than they solve in today’s world of agile, DevOps, and CI/CD. This talk will share practical lessons learned at Etsy on the most effective application security techniques in today’s increasingly rapid world of application creation and delivery. Specifically, it will cover how to: 1) Adapt traditionally heavyweight controls like static analysis and dynamic scanning to lightweight efforts that work in modern development and deployment practices 2) Obtain visibility to enable, rather than hinder, development, and DevOps teams ability to iterate quickly 3) Measure maturity of your organization’s security efforts in a non-theoretical way
